In this book, the Dutch Committee for Long-Term Environmental Policy, an expert advisory board to the Dutch Ministry of Housing, Physical Planning and Environment, examines possible options for directing the world towards a sustainable future, a world in which sustainable development is both possible and guaranteed. In essence, this book exemplifies the search for a new social order - an order in which economic development and environmental protection are considered inextricably interdependent. The four main elements of this search are: (1) signs of hope for a sustainable future; (2) transformations which are needed to reach this future; (3) philosophical and methodological reflections; and (4) the necessary changes in the basic institutiions of society. The committee invited well-known experts from various disciplines to analyze the existing social order from the point of view of sustainability and to make recommendations for the future. The central conclusion that we are in need of an evolving green strategy aimed at sustainability. In addition to outlining this strategy, the committee makes extensive practical recommendations. As the committee states: "There is no certainty and no statistical probability for a sustainable future, but at least there is the chance." Dordrecht (also Boston, London)
