Eurotaoismus: Zur Kritik der Politischen Kinetik
by Peter Sloterdijk
Peter Sloterdijk describes modernity as a kinetic utopia in which the achieved freedom is the freedom of movement. He transforms modern movement into 'progress'. The kinetic movements of progress are the material of which modernity is weaven. This leads to the following formula: 'progress is movement to move, movement to move more, movement to increase the possibility to move'.
To develop a postmodern critique of movement, Sloterdijk is searching for a criterium to distinguish real movement from false mobilisation in Eastern history. The new concept he introduces in 'Eurotaoismus' is derived from the Asiatic renaissance. Our notice of time can be regenerated by integrating the Asian interpretation into our culture. In practice this means, according to Sloterdijk, that we have to dissociate from fastness and mobility. We can only balance the madness of the total movement, by creating our own peace of mind, wether we do it by meditation or by living in a commune.
